MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

The Abeokuta Grammar School and Women Education:

Even as early as the beginning of the 20th century, the Egba people were as conscious of the need to provide secondary school education for their daughters as they were in the case of their sons. Thus the defunct Abeokuta Girls School came under the sheltering wings of the Abeokuta Grammar School in 1914. In a letter dated 5-8-1933 written by the Revd. W.R.B. Kuye to the Revd. I.O. Ransome - Kuti on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the School, he listed the following among the women who received their education at the Abeokuta Grammar School at that time: Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome - Kuti (nee Thomas), Mrs. G.A. Sobu (nee Kuye), Mrs. Deyo Lanihun (nee Lipede), Mrs. F. Iyadun Martins (nee Olumide), Miss Joke Jibowu, Miss Clementina Martins (nee Adeyinka), Mrs. Lydia Ogunrombi (nee Sobaki), Madam Adelin Noo-noo (nee Fisher), Mrs. Olive Coker (nee Solanke), Mrs. Bisi Okubadejo (nee Jibowu).

Since then hundreds of girls from all parts of Nigeria have attended the Abeokuta Grammar School and are now holding their own and contributing meaningfully to the progress of Nigeria in various spheres - the professions, commerce, diplomacy, industry. Only a few can be mentioned here - Miss Mabel jumbo, miss Dolupo Ransome - Kuti, Mrs. Funke Sodunke (nee Ilori), Miss Eerinola Dare, Mrs. Apinke Adewoyin (nee Ogungbade), Mrs. V. Ireti Olomodosi (nee Esan), Mrs. Ajoke Mohammed (nee Lanval) (wife of late General Murtala Mohammed), Mrs. Tinu Aina (nee Soyinka), Miss Yeside Soyinka, Mar. Kofo Alder (nee Labode), Mrs. Kunbi Iluyomade (nee Grillo), Mrs. Bola Bolade (nee Babalola), Mrs. A.A. Morolare (nee Fajobi), Olori M. Lipede (nee Sowani), Mrs. Adola Onini (nee Benson). Dr. Mrs. Delano, Ms Tola Olujobi, Ms. Esther Solende, Mrs. Towobola, Chief (Mrs.) Toyin Odegbami.

Abeokuta Grammar School and Royalty:

The connection between Abeokuta Grammar School and Royalty has been longstanding. The ceremony marking the inauguration of the school on 16th July, 1908 was witnessed, among others, by Oba David Sokunbi Karunwi, the Osile of Oke-Ona, and the first literate Oba to reign in Abeokuta. He was a product of Lagos Grammar School. On 21st December, 1910 the Alake,Oba Gbadebo I, carried the first stone used in laying the foundation of the Main Building at the Igbein Site. His successor, Oba Ladapo Ademola II, was a great friend of the school. He visited the school on many occasions and also presided at some of the functions held in the school. His comments in the Visitors Book of the school make interesting reading. His own successor, Oba Adesina Gbadebo II turned the first sod at the new (Idi-Aba) site on July 31, 1965. His own successor too, Oba Oyebade Lipede I, presided in 1983 at the launching of an Endowment Fund for the building of structures like an Assembly Hall on the new site.

Many princes and princesses from Egbaland and other domains have also attended the Abeokuta Grammar School. Some have gone on later to ascend the thrones of their ancestors. Among such are Oba Samuel Adesina Gbadebo II, Oba Oyebade Lipede I, the reigning Alake of Egabland, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the reigning Ooni of Ife and Oba Adekanbi Tella, the reigning Olu of Ilaro. The Osile of Oke-ona Egba Oba Dapo Tejuoso.

Abeokuta Grammar School and Sporting Activities

The Abeokuta Grammar School believes strongly in the dictum "mens Sana in corpore sano" therefore the school has, since its inception, strong participation in games and sports alongside pursuit to academic excellence. Not only did the pupils of the school start to take examinations of the royal College of Preceptors as far back as December, 1909 and examinations of the Cambridge Local as from 1911, but inspection reports of the early years also spoke of the interest shown in sports, especially football. The first such inspection was in February, 1918 by Mr. Percy F. Herbert and the second in June 1918 by Mr. C.A. Cummins. Later the school added Cricket and Athletics to the list of sports engaged in by the pupils.

Right from early in its history, the school has always proved its mettle in inter-school competitions. The first recorded encounter was the Children's Sports organized at the Abeokuta Race Course on Tuesday, 5th August, 1918 by the Peace Committee to mark the end of the First World War. Competitors from the school also held their own creditably in such encounters as the Empire Day Sports Competition, the Alake (Ademola II) Coronation Sports, the Grier Cup Competition, the Aionian Competition to name a few.

A detailed account of the school's spectacular achievements in sporting competitions will be left to a much larger work than this short history. However a few outstanding athletes of yesteryears are worth mentioning - such men as Bennet Irele (of Relay Race fame) J.A. Lawanson (Lawy Ejo) lately of the National Sports Council, A. Labode (the miler), Lekan Okanlawon, B. Ogunjimi, B. Oyekan, Edward Majekodunmi, S.O. Craig, Olisa Chukura, Ayinla Dawodu, Dire Maku, S. Byron, B. Lipede, E. Ehondor, E. Ekunife, E. Oji, Olawale Folarin (alias Okabiti), C. Sekoni (now a High Court Judge), O. Majekodunmi (who won a Silver Medal for Nigeria in High Jump at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in New Zealand), T. Adeogun, R. Akinola, H. Banmah, J. Salako, R. Jaiyeola, A. Amode, A. Babayemi, Bazunu.

The younger generation of students has also been pulling its weight. Even though sporting facilities on the new site have not reached the required standard and the field is still under construction, the students have continued to score impressive results in various games e.g. Squash Rackets, Lawn Tennis, Badmington to name a few. A girl, Miss Ranti Faliyo is a member of the national Athletics Team. Her events are 400 metres and 800 metres and Relay. She won the only Gold Medal for Ogun State (in 400 metres) at the 1987 national Sports Festival in Port Harcourt. Another girl, Miss Toyin Dasaolu, broke the Aionian Record in 1500 metres at the march, 1988 Aionian Competition in Ondo.

Old Boys of the School - (AGSOBA)

The Old Boys (and Girls) of the Abeokuta Grammar School have always shown great attachment to their Alma Mater and have shown their affection for the school in diverse ways. They feel very proud to attribute much of their success in life to the sound moral and academic training the school had given them. They show their love for the school and their desire to see the ideals which the school stands for to flourish by awarding annual prizes in academic pursuits, co-curricular activities and moral training. Annually, prizes pour in towards the time of the Prize - giving Day.

In addition, the old students have always done their Alma Mater proud by their outstanding achievements in life. As employees, they are usually eagerly sought after because of their dedication to duty, their painstaking nature and their close attention to details. It is not surprising therefore to find them rising o the greatest heights imaginable in Commerce, Industry, Medicine, the Law, the Diplomatic Service, Academics, the Civil Service etc.

With the large number of people qualified for mentioning, it will be invidious to single out a few. However, mention can be made of some of the oldest old boys whose achievements have been a source of inspiration to generations of old students after them.
